Direct Payments for Older People
Age Concern Liverpool is working with Liverpool City Council to widen access to Direct Payments to give older people greater choice and control over their lives. When people have been assessed as having care needs, they can choose who they employ to provide that care and receive money from Liverpool City Council to pay for it.
What are Direct Payments?
• A Direct Payment is money which is paid directly to you to employ someone of your own choice to support you in your daily living.
• With Direct Payments you have independence and control of your life. You make the choices over who provides your support, what support is given and at what times.
• The money you receive in the form of a Direct Payment is not taxable income and will not affect any welfare benefits you may be receiving.

Who is eligible for Direct Payments?
• Anyone who is 16 or over and is assessed as needing care.
What are the advantages?
• You can choose a person of your choice to work for you. It could be an agency worker, someone you know or a friend or neighbour or Age Concern can help you to recruit someone.
• You can arrange with them the times to work that suit you.
• You have a say in the care you will receive.
• You are the employer and have control of your care.
What support can we offer you?
• Age Concern Liverpool will give you the support you need to help you manage your Direct Payment.
• We can give information and advice on how the scheme works.
• We can help you to advertise and recruit someone.
• We can assist you to make all the necessary arrangements to set up your Direct Payment and advise on how to manage the paperwork.
• We will continue to be available to assist you if you need help or support.
